Mishpetei HaRav Kook / Parashat Bo
„Our temporal existence is one spark of the eternal existence, of the glory of the eternity of eternities, and it is impossible to bring forth into actuality the treasure of good hidden within the content of temporal life except according to the magnitude of its conformity to eternal life...”From Orot HaKodesh II, 37
Man is a temporal being. And our time is measured, from our birth to our death, in a number of years that is but a comma against the eternity of life. When our lives are concentrated only on the needs of the here and now — only on the needs of the body and physical needs — they are cut off from eternity. But when we are focused, alongside the needs of daily life, also on the soul, on the spirit, on the whole world — then we connect to a very long chain of which we are an inseparable part, of what was in it in the past and what will be in it in the future. In our portion it is written of the month of Nisan, "This month shall be for you the head of months," pointing to the time of the exodus from Egyptian slavery as a time of a new beginning from which a new story is created — the story of Jewish eternity.
