The Sigd Festival

„There are those who come to the Land like a cloud, and there are those who come like doves. The winds carry the clouds from place to place with no defined destination; but the doves return to their home, to their dovecotes. There are Jews who are led against their will, like clouds, from place to place, and by chance land in the Land of Israel; and there are those who know that their coming to the Land is a return home, like doves to their dovecotes.”From Chayei HaRe'iyah, p. 202

Seven weeks after Yom Kippur, the Ethiopian community celebrates the festival of Sigd, which is a festival of longing and yearning for the Land of Israel and for Jerusalem. Thank God, we have merited to see with our own eyes the return of our brothers to their home and their state. And likewise the multitudes of the house of Israel from every place in the world — returning home, even after thousands of years, "like doves to their dovecotes."
