Against Factionalism
„We have always known that human beings are not equal in their levels, especially in their spiritual content, which is the foundation of life. But that there should be a fixed and specific label designating cliques and factions, that we never knew.”From Ma'amarei HaRe'iyah, Masa HaMachanot
Nearly ninety years ago, Rav Kook took a firm stand against labeling the different sectors of the Jewish people with names. In his day these were the "free ones" (that is, the secular) and the "Haredim." The Rav called such names idolatrous names and argued that they betray the truth and create division. A person is measured and judged by their various deeds, but when a public is designated by a name, the damage that can arise from it is vast and terrible. I recommend searching online for the essay "Masa HaMachanot" (The Journey of the Camps) and reading it in full.
