„We have a tradition that a spiritual rebellion will take place in the Land of Israel and among Israel, at the point when the beginning of the nation's revival awakens to come... The need for this rebellion is the inclination toward materiality, which must be produced in the nation as a whole in a forceful form... and these are the birth pangs of the Messiah.”From Orot HaTechiyah 44
In Parashat Va'etchanan, Moses speaks of the anticipated change of leadership upon entering the Land. The great leader will step down from the stage and be replaced by Joshua. Entering the Land of Israel is a new and different stage, requiring different powers from those of dwelling in exile and in the wilderness. The difficulties that accompany sovereignty over a state are an immense advance, despite their harsh appearance. It would be well for us too to remember, alongside the difficulties of everyday life, how much our forefathers prayed to merit and to be in our situation.
