„in which he speaks of the importance of unity”
„in which he speaks of the importance of unity”
In Letter 571 the Rav writes that the task of the "Mizrachi" is the work of peace. This is a cultural work, a worldview capable of seeing the good in every side and thereby uniting all the most fruitful forces in the nation. The unity of the nation is not merely a state in which there are no quarrels between the different sides, but rather joint work, whereby each one sees the virtue of his fellow, and then it becomes possible to act together — for surely every faction has some good thing, but one must find it and make proper use of it. The Rav argues that just as, according to the outlook of the Mizrachi movement, one must not sit idle in all that pertains to the settlement of the Land of Israel, but rather plow, plant, establish settlements, etc., so too, regarding the drawing near of hearts, one must not sit idle. Just as we do not expect that the redemption will come from heaven but rather through the labor of hands, so too, regarding the drawing near of hearts, one must not wait for Elijah the Prophet to accomplish the task, but rather we ourselves must act.
We must take upon ourselves the role of Elijah: both to clarify the good that exists in the children, and the good that exists in the fathers, and to try to persuade each side to recognize the merits of the other. Only after we have done our part in drawing hearts near and in uniting the children and the fathers, will Elijah do his part.
(This time, on a one-time basis, I took the words from the website of the Petach Tikva yeshiva. There is in these words no expression of a political opinion for a particular candidate in a particular party, but rather general support for the idea of unity.)
Have a pleasant rest of the day, everyone.
For the recovery of Chaim ben Limor.
