„The world is constantly changing. Mighty changes take place in the human spirit, just as in the orders of life changes come about through the ways of action and experience. But the changes are changes of style, not essential ones—just as nature does not change, but rather its powers are styled...”From Shemonah Kevatzim, I, 190

How our world advances! How our world has changed in the last decade, in the last century, truly beyond recognition. What changes have come upon man! If once it took weeks and months to obtain information, today it is done in hundredths of a second...

Rav Kook says that these changes are changes of style—the human spirit and the spirit of the world are the same spirit. We adapt in accordance with reality and change behaviors, but just as nature does not truly change, so the world and man do not truly change in their very essence.

This matter is most important and profound in our relation to all progress; we must remember the fact of our being human at each and every moment, and not be swept to places and states that are not proper and not suited to the human spirit.

When the outer limit of the world's capacity was stretched, the world began to be sick (the greenhouse effect, for example...), and when the outer limit of a person's capacity is stretched, the person becomes sick...

We must rejoice in the changes, but constantly remember that the seconds pulse at the same pace, the heart pulsing within us pulses in the same way, and the wind blowing outside is the same wind...

The hard period in which we now find ourselves places a red warning sign upon the stretching of the boundaries of the world and of man. It is an opportunity we did not invite, but once it has come before us we must know how to make use of it—to understand what the world is telling us, what man is telling us, and what God is telling us.
