Thinking Small

„The evil inclination entices a person to grasp at what is smallest; and if it sees that a person is capable of some great virtue, it lures him toward a small virtue in order to rob him of the great one.”From Notebook 5, 5

You know the feeling of busying yourself with one more detail, one more task, one more thing that needs sorting out – filling life with activity that may be good and important, yet leaves us in exactly the same place? This may be one of the greatest traps, because there is nothing in it that looks bad. We need to stay alert and check when we begin acting out of inertia and disconnection. This does not mean we must always be climbing, advancing, or working frantically. It does mean we should be aware of the steps we take, and not slip into a state where we ignore our real needs simply because we have checked off one more thing. One can do many right things and still remain far from the place we truly could have reached.
