Moshe Rabbenu

„The more a person rises in his spiritual form, the more he feels the great value of the many; the community begins to live within his inner being... and then he rises to become an ideal communal leader.”From Orot HaKodesh, III, 155

The seventh of Adar, which fell last night, is the day of the birth and the passing of Moshe Rabbenu, the first leader of the people of Israel. A true leader, the more he grows and develops, ceases to see the community as an external reality that he acts against. And so leadership ceases to be a role and becomes an inner identity. Moshe Rabbenu, peace be upon him, gave over his private world for the sake of the people, out of full identification with the fate and destiny of the collective. This path of leadership passed to other great and distinguished leaders. Rav Kook would sign his letters "a servant of the holy people," and out of that consciousness of service he refused to set for himself boundaries of personal comfort in the face of the communal need.
