Struggle and Unity
„Wretched shall we be if these three forces (the holy, the national, the human), which must be unified within us... we leave scattered, in their rebellion against one another, and in the division of each one into its own separate camp, standing as an adversary against the other camp.”From Orot HaTechiyah 18
I do not know what Rav Kook would say were he alive today; I do know what he said in the past. And in the past he demanded of us inner courage, the courage to recognize that the struggle is not between good and evil but between partial truths that have lost the ability to meet. For holiness without national and human responsibility becomes dogmatic and impervious; nationalism without holiness and humanity deteriorates into empty violence and the cult of power; and humanity without the root of holiness and without national belonging dissolves into a rootless, uncommitted progressive universalism. The deep need is for the unity of all the forces together.
