Candle 2
„Let all who come into the world, who walk in the lands of the living, know that the eternal light is ours, and from us come rays to illuminate through them the land and its streets.”From Ner Hanukkah, Ma'amarei HaRe'iyah
The collision between the spirit of Greece and the spirit of Israel is not merely a historical event but an ongoing process in which outer beauty tries to dim inner truth. Rav Kook says that a person himself knows, in the depth of his soul, that there is no existence for the spirit and for society without values and depth and holiness. When there is danger, when the world fills with hatred or confusion and the light outside is not perceived, there is no place for setting the candle at the doorway. The light returns inward, to the family table, to a person's culture, to his Torah and to the cleanliness of his hands. And when the storm subsides, the inner light returns to the outer regions, and reminds the world that true illumination is created from within. And true light is not games of electricity and color, but a deep process of a whole life.
