Candle 1

„In each and every one of Israel, from the greatest to the smallest, the light of the living God burns and shines in holy radiance.”From Orot Yisrael, IX, 4

Every year, I encounter the beautiful poem that is quoted in the name of Rav Kook, and in fact it is not his: "Every person must know and understand that deep within him burns a candle, and his candle is not like his fellow's candle. And there is no person who has no candle. And every person must know and understand that it is upon him to labor and reveal the light of the candle in public, and to kindle it into a great torch and to illuminate the whole world." The quotation appearing above is Rav Kook's and was written in Orot Yisrael. The poem is of our times, and it in fact interprets the quotation from Orot Yisrael: in each and every one of us there is a light of God that burns and shines. A unique light. And in each and every one of us there is the power to continue and to renew. And to spread the great light. Rav Kook educated people toward strength. Toward the drawing-forth of the lights. In fact, this poem that has become so widely quoted is exactly what the quotation says - each and every one of us can illuminate. Each and every one of us can continue the light. To add light. Happy Hanukkah!
