The Sukkah as a Fortress

„The sukkah is for us a fortress of defense... For the courage required of us for the building of our house, that is, the building of our national home, we need specifically spiritual strengthening.”From Ma'amarei HaRe'iyah, HaSukkah

How is the flimsy sukkah a fortress of defense? Rav Kook explains that we must be very wary of the feeling of 'my strength and the might of my hand.' A confusing feeling that may lead a person to think that by his own strength he is the sole ruler of his surroundings. We are part of the creation; the Holy One, blessed be He, planted in us powers through which we are to advance reality and repair the world in the kingdom of the Almighty; we must fight against evil, work in order to earn a living, and so on. And alongside this, we must also remember that in the end everything is from the Holy One, blessed be He. And so even a sukkah can be a fortress by the word of God. We see this eye to eye in these two years. We are obligated to make our effort, to fight the enemy, to enlist and do everything within our power to overcome wickedness. And alongside this, to remember the compass within us, our holy Torah, which is what gives us strength to act valiantly. To act by its strength, to give by its strength, to prevail by its strength. On the battlefield and in all the fields of our lives.
