Be Yourself
„Every person must know that he is called to serve according to his own particular mode of perception and feeling, according to the root of his soul, and in that world... he will find the treasure of his life.”From Shemonah Kevatzim, IV 6
It is no coincidence that each and every one of us has special talents, things we are drawn to more, things that are easier for us to do, or more right and natural for us to do. We have a role in the world, and we must do specifically our own role. There is comfort in this – that a person is asked to do what is natural to him – but beneath that comfort there is also responsibility. Rav Kook is not writing here about free-flowing or “do what you feel.” He demands of each person to identify the root of his soul, to listen to the worlds destined for him, and to act. To build, to refine, to reveal his own unique letter in the Torah and in life. And when we succeed in touching our true place and acting from within it, we will be able to repair ourselves, our surroundings, and the world.
