Parashat Behar-Bechukotai

„A special need exists for this nation... that from time to time its divine light will be revealed within it in all its radiance, a light that the secular life of society, with its toil and worry, its gloom and competition, cannot silence.”From Shabbat Ha'Aretz

In this week's portion appear the sabbatical year and the jubilee. And in these days the world's need for the sabbatical and jubilee years is so understandable. Just as a person needs the Sabbath, in order to reset the system, to gather strength, to connect to what is higher than himself, so too does the world. To stop for a moment, to breathe, to give a new opportunity to those who need it, to free servants and maidservants, to begin anew. In order to bring the light of Judaism to ourselves and to the whole world, one must also know how to stop.
