The Teaching of Rav Kook / Jewish Identity – The Seal of Eternity

„Even if a worthless thought should arise to change the dough of our forefathers... forever all your deeds will be of no avail, for the dough of our forefathers did not have time to leaven, and forever our collective dough will never leaven.”From Ma'amarei HaRaayah, Matzah Zo

Rav Kook describes the moment of redemption as a force that shaped the people of Israel for eternity. Just as the dough did not leaven, so too the inner identity of the people will not change in its essence. True, the people of Israel has undergone immense changes, but the seal of redemption imprinted within it since then cannot be uprooted. Our identity is not merely a result of choice or environment – it is an inseparable part of our existence. Even when it receives different expressions, the very essence of its being remains faithful to its root, to the redemption that made us into a people, and to the spirit that accompanies us through all the generations.
