Parashat Mishpatim
„When the dark spirit that breeds the head of malice, impurity, and wickedness gathers into the heart of great masses, it works terrible things.”From Olat Re'iyah 82
In this week's portion the laws of the Torah are brought, whose purpose is to produce a more proper and healthy society. The Torah wished to produce a world that has consideration for the individual, alongside a view of the collective. What is hard to understand in our generation was understood then in a clear way – “one who is merciful to the cruel will in the end be cruel to the merciful” – and taking the soft and compassionate stance toward the wicked means endless suffering for the good. The evil in the world must be eradicated, and better one hour sooner!
