Parashat Beshalach
„You, my dear one, ask: why did we treat them (the seven nations) with harshness? We cannot depict how dark and low the world would have been without this harshness of ours.”From Ma'amarei HaRaayah, 508
In this week's portion appears the command to blot out Amalek. With the eyes of our own day it is hard to read a command that seeks to destroy the entire enemy, its seed and its remembrance. When the tribes of Israel become a people and go out from Egypt, and the moment they cross the sea they encounter an enemy whose entire desire is to kill them, they understand that there is a meaning in a world of absolute evil. Of a pure evil whose whole essence is that we should know to destroy it. They understand then that not all of us are equal, and not all the world is good, but that there is also evil, and that we are commanded to destroy it.
