Parashat Vayigash

„It is fitting for us to take to heart to strive toward the tendency of the unification of the tree of Joseph and the tree of Judah.”From HaHesped BiYerushalayim, Ma'amrei HaRe'iyah

Upon the passing of Herzl, Rav Kook eulogizes him. He raises up the need for the unification of the powers of Joseph and Judah – the power of the national provider, and the power of the spiritual lion. The division of the kingdoms and the rift in the people of Israel created a difficult reality on account of which the people of Israel suffer. Precisely the deep understanding that the material power and the spiritual power stream into and strengthen one another will bring about revival and hope.
