There are wars over territories or disagreements in which the spiritual side is not involved. It does its work and its business, and so too the men of war. But those who led the people of Israel in the wars of survival, and in the wars of light and holiness, were, among others, the great ones of the generation. Such was Samson, and such was Saul, and such was David. And like them, the Hasmoneans too – a family of the high priesthood.
