29 March 2016 · A sentence from the teachings of Rav Kook

„Cowardice is the worst grievance, from which a person must extricate…”

„Cowardice is the worst grievance, from which a person must extricate himself just as he must extricate himself from sadness, from pride, from anger, and from boredom. Heresy comes into the world in order to dispel the cowardice that unrefined faith brings into the world, and when it completes its task, it itself gives added strength to faith. (Notebook 4, 91)”

Everything in this world has a role. This is part of the essence of Rav Kook's teaching, and so he argues also regarding heresy. Heresy, like insolence and daring, opens doors that others were afraid to open in the past. It causes damage, of course - at times immense damage.

But alongside the damage it has a role. Like everything in our world.

Fear prevents us from advancing. At times it paralyzes entire systems. Sometimes a single push into the water can advance us, in the end, more than dozens of lessons.
