A Time of Emergency

During the First World War, the Rav decided to write a book on the hidden Torah - the Torah of Kabbalah. He explains his decision thus: when we are in a time of emergency, all the systems of our lives are shaken and we must make changes from the very foundation. The ordinary spiritual world does not know how to give "halachic" answers to such a state of upheaval, and the search is for depth. It seems to me this is true for all parts of life. In a short while it will be nine months in a world shaken to its foundations. And we are shaken. And we seek depth in all the ways of our lives.
