Shavuot - The Festival of the Broken

„Even this contradiction of the need to build shall be called building, and from the light of the Torah and the ways of its inquiry this light must sparkle forth.”From Ein Ayah, Shabbat 9:43

When was the Torah given to Israel? The true answer is not Shavuot, but Yom Kippur. That is when the second tablets came down. The tablets given at Mount Sinai were shattered. We are, in fact, celebrating the festival of the broken tablets. In a perfect, heavenly world there is no place for broken tablets. But in our tangible world, where we ourselves are built and broken time and again, the festival of the giving of the Torah teaches us about the power of the break and the might of the repair. Shavuot, the festival of repair.

I wish you all a happy Shavuot. And good tidings.
