Successful and Close to the City
„He must be firm in his individual state, a person of possessions - both material possessions and spiritual possessions... yet with all of them he shall be close to the life of the community, and ready to assist it.”From Ein Ayah, Berachot 7:10
In the blessing of the guest recited in the Grace After Meals, we say "and may his possessions and our possessions be successful and close to the city." Rav Kook expounds this blessing as an outlook on life. Its central point is that alongside our personal, individual need to succeed, we must also be connected to the needs of the community - to "be close to the life of the community." Many thanks to Yedidya Meir for sharing the passage from which I took this piece.
